Backstory

The Reluctant Hero

Before the forge. Long before he was Silverleaf Village's smith, Theren was its eyes in the deep wood — a hunter and scout who ranged the old forest for the better part of a lifetime, reading trails no one else could see and trading words with its creatures as easily as with his own kin. He was good at it. Too good, some whispered; the cold patience of tracking and killing settled a quiet on him that the village mistook for wisdom. So when his father's forge finally fell silent, Theren hung the bow above the hearth and took up the hammer in its place — grateful to trade the hunt for honest, predictable work that asked nothing of him but skill.

For over a century after, he worked the forges of Silverleaf Village, crafting tools and weapons with the patient skill passed down through generations of his family. His smith's tools weren't just instruments of trade — they were his connection to a proud lineage of artisans who had served their community for centuries. Life was predictable, honest work that let him provide for his people without the complications of politics or glory-seeking. The bow gathered dust. He told himself he was glad of it.

Everything changed the night the fey came calling.

They weren't raiders or monsters — they were recruiters. The Prince of Frost had grown fascinated with elven craftsmanship and demanded the village's finest smith serve in his realm, forging cold wonders for an archfey who collected useful things. When the village elders gathered to "discuss terms," Theren realized with growing horror that they were actually considering the offer. The fey promised prosperity, magical knowledge, protection from other threats — all for the small price of their master craftsman.

The debate raged for hours. Some argued it was an honor. Others feared refusing would bring down terrible retribution. But no one asked Theren what he wanted.

When dawn broke, the elders had reached their decision: they would "respectfully recommend" that their smith accept this "generous opportunity." The vote wasn't even close.

That night, Theren took the bow down from above the hearth for the first time in decades. He did not drive the Prince's agents off in some single, glorious stand — one aging smith against the courts of winter was never going to be that. Instead he did what he had been before he ever lifted a hammer: he made them bleed for every step. He harried them through trees they thought they owned, turned their own cold patience back on them, set the wild against them — birds and beasts that still remembered his voice — until retreating cost the fey less than staying. They left. They were not destroyed. He has never once let himself forget the difference.

The grateful villagers called him their champion, but he knew the truth: when it mattered most, they had been ready to trade him away.

He still carries his smith's tools, not just to remember his craft, but to remember that when people's comfort is threatened, principles become negotiable. His trust, once freely given, now has to be earned through actions — not words, not promises, not good intentions. He talks more easily to animals than to people these days; the wild has never once put him to a vote.

Why he's on the road. Theren did not leave Silverleaf in exile — he left ahead of the threat. The Prince of Frost's recruiters withdrew, but archfey are patient and they do not forget a debt or a slight. If they could not have him, they would find another village, another useful soul, somewhere over the next ridge. So he hunts them now: tracking the cold trail of fey bargains from settlement to settlement, arriving before the recruiters do, determined that no one else will have to learn what their neighbors are willing to trade away. It is also, though he would never say so aloud, the only thing that has made him feel like himself again.

The Twist: Theren isn't hunting fey out of hatred. He's hunting them because he understands them. The fey don't see mortals as evil — they see them as useful. And sometimes, so do the mortals themselves.

Loose threads (hooks for the DM):

The Prince of Frost's recruiters left alive and were embarrassed by a single smith. That is unfinished business on both sides.
Silverleaf still stands, its elders still in power. Theren has kin and a forge there he has not gone back to.
He carries cold-iron tools and at least one bow of his own making — quietly the equal of any fey-touched blade, if anyone thinks to ask what a master smith's weapon can do.
