The Deck of Many Things — Too Dangerous to Draw Yet

dramatic Theren Vale

The party loots the legendary Deck of Many Things, and the DM reads off its terrifying possibilities: imprisonment in an extra-dimensional sphere, incredible wealth, or having all your worldly possessions stripped away. Theren wisely decides not to draw a card yet, ending the session on a tantalizing, dangerous hook.

The last discovery of the night is also the scariest one. Reece lays out exactly what the party is holding: "The deck of many things is a legendary magical item that allows a player to draw cards with powerful, often irreversible effects ranging from great boons to devastating curses."

He doesn't sugarcoat the downside. "Donjon imprisons you in an extra-dimensional sphere. Ruin strips you of all your worldly possessions." Faced with that math, Theren makes the smart call and leaves the deck untouched. "I don't think I need to use it right now," he says — a tantalizing, dangerous hook left dangling for whenever the party is brave (or foolish) enough to come back for it.
