The Plan Paid Off

The party walked into a cavern holding four ogres with a plan built two sessions ahead — and walked out at level 4 with every ogre dead and every character standing.

This one was earned before the first die was rolled.

The party didn't stumble into the entry cavern — they arrived with a plan they'd built in advance: the bat scouting overhead, Fog Cloud staged, marching order set before anyone crossed the threshold. Then they executed it against four ogres and a cavern full of goblins.

And it paid off. Theren's mark went up. Barzer's fog went down — and the enemy fell apart inside it, to the point where Ogre C put a javelin through its own ally. When the fog cleared and the plan met reality (the rock plateau that turned out to be a mud puddle, with Barzer standing next to it in full view of the room), the party absorbed the surprise and kept working the problem. Elaris closed the book on the marked ogre with a 1 HP hit.

Final ledger: all four ogres dead, a goblin warrior with them, and — the part worth raising a glass to — nobody went down. This is the same party whose Ranger ate two crits and hit death saves the last time this cave got pushy. Not this time. This time the table fought like a unit that planned together, and the cave paid for it.

Everyone leveled to 4 on the spot.

Here's to not dying. Now let's clear the rest of the dungeon.

Back-to-Back Nat 20s: Goblins Wiped, Ogre Bloodied

Elaris drops a nat 20 to confirm the goblins are dead. Barzer looks through the window and does it again — straight onto the ogre.

Some nat 20s end fights. Some start them. This sequence did both in under ten seconds.

Elaris Moonveil rolls and gets that beautiful 20 — all the goblins inside the building are confirmed dead. The table barely has time to cheer before Barzer spots the ogre through the window. He raises his hand, rolls, and watches another 20 land.

The table erupts.

Barzer rolls his d10 twice for double damage — gets an 8, doubles it to 16 — and the ogre goes bloodied. One room cleared, the next enemy already on the clock. Back-to-back natural 20s from two different casters in the same breath. The kind of sequence that gets retold at every session for the next three months.

28 to Zero

A perfect stealth roll, a betrayal by armor, and a round that ends careers.

Theren scouts ahead into the cave and rolls a 20 on stealth - nearly perfect, the kind of number that makes the table cheer. But scale mail doesn't care about your dice. The armor shifts, the sound carries, and every ogre in the cave turns to look. A goblin crits him for 8. An ogre crits him for 20. In one round, Theren goes from full health to face-down in the dirt. First death save: 9. Failed.

Nysera Drops the Ogre: The Final Breath

Nysera lands the killing blow on the ogre — then describes its near-decapitation in vivid, brutal detail. The table is speechless.

Some kills get narrated flat. This one didn't.

Reece walks Nysera through it — roll beats the AC, the spell connects, the ogre is hers. Then he hands it back: "All right, describe it."

What comes out is not a hesitant narration. The spell crosses the room and hits the ogre directly in the neck. The head doesn't come off — it almost comes off, left dangling by a piece of skin, the ogre spewing blood, eyes twitching, its last breath rattling out. Then it topples forward. The whole building shakes when it hits the floor.

Reece's response: "Oh God."

That's the sound of a DM realizing their player has arrived. Not a timid cantrip. A statement.

The Cheese Incident

In a crisis, Selena reaches for a weapon. She finds cheese.

With Theren bleeding out on the cave floor and ogres closing in, Selena reaches for a weapon. She finds stinky cheese. She lobs it into the fray as a distraction, and it hits Theren on the way down. The man is unconscious, dying, and now covered in cheese. Tactical genius or genuine desperation? The party still can't agree.

Enemy Rolls Back-to-Back Nat 20s — Die Sentenced to Time Out

A goblin hits the same party member with nat 20s on consecutive attacks. 25 damage total. The die is formally banned from the table.

The party thought nat 20s were their thing. The goblins had other ideas.

One goblin — one — hits a party member with a natural 20. Then, on the very next attack against the same target, rolls another natural 20. Twenty-five damage total from a single goblin in a single turn. The table doesn't know whether to laugh or rage, so it does both.

The verdict comes swiftly: the offending die is banned from further play. Time out. Done. Ross, undeterred by the chaos, announces a strategic pivot: "From now on, I'm just going to piss on things."

The die sat in exile for the rest of the session. Its crime was not forgotten.

Seven Hit Points

One failed death save. One bonus action. Seven hit points between alive and dead.

Theren has failed his first death save. The ogres are right there. Elaris sprints to within 30 feet and fires off Healing Word - just a bonus action, just a few words of power. Seven hit points flow into Theren. It's not much, but it's the difference between alive and dead. He's back on his feet before the next swing lands.

Barzer's Fog Cloud Bat: Splitting the Battlefield in Two

Before the cave assault, Barzer lays out a full tactical briefing: position the bat familiar at 10 feet, cast fog cloud, blind everything above while the party fights freely below.

Some players enter a room. Some players divide it.

Before the party moves into the cave, Barzer stops everyone and runs the plan. His bat familiar floats exactly 10 feet off the ground — the same height as the goblin archers perched on the cave ledges. Cast Fog Cloud centered on the bat at that exact elevation. The spell creates a horizontal wall of obscurement: everything above it is blind, everything below is not. The goblins at ground level are visible and can be engaged freely. The ogres, and anything lurking near the ceiling, are fighting with disadvantage.

Once the party engages and gives away position, those blinded enemies still can't see them clearly. The plan holds for the duration of the fight. "An hour for fog cloud?" Reece asks, disbelieving. An hour.

One bat. One spell. Two separate battles. Barzer had already won before the party walked through the door.

The Chase

One ogre down, one running. The smart play is to hold. They don't hold.

One ogre down, the other bloodied and running. The smart play is to hold position and regroup. But Theren and Elaris look at each other and make the call: chase. They push into the dark after a wounded ogre, leaving the rest of the party behind. The session ends mid-sprint, deep in a cave, with unknown threats ahead and their backup still catching up. Sometimes the best moments are the worst decisions.

Nysera Asks to Poison Spray the Dungeon Master

Mid-rules explanation, Nysera interrupts to ask if she can poison spray the DM. The table immediately warns of divine retribution via d100 lightning bolt.

Chris was in the middle of explaining reactions — silvery barbs, shields, how timing works — when Nysera had a more pressing question.

"Can I hit the DM with my poison spray?"

The answer, technically, is: on your turn. Whether that's a yes or an invitation to catastrophe is a matter of interpretation. The table's threat assessment was immediate: there may be a d100 lightning bolt coming down on Nysera in response. The kind of retaliatory strike that only a Dungeon Master can authorize, at the worst possible moment, on the worst possible roll.

Nysera weighed the risks. She did not poison spray the DM. The threat of the d100 bolt remains live.

Spike Growth + Wild Shape: Nysera's Concentration Loop

Chris breaks down a core druid synergy: cast Spike Growth first, Wild Shape second, and concentration transfers — letting Nysera maintain a battlefield control spell while fighting as a beast.

Druid has a lot of options. Two of them work exceptionally well together.

The setup: Nysera casts Spike Growth as an action, taking concentration. Then, as a bonus action, she Wild Shapes into beast form. The concentration doesn't drop — it transfers. She's now concentrating on Spike Growth as a beast, maintaining a punishing field of razor-sharp terrain while fighting in melee as an animal with its own HP pool.

Cast the spell. Transform. Fight. The spikes remain. Enemies who try to cross or retreat through the affected area take damage whether Nysera is watching them or not.

It costs nothing extra. It requires no special setup beyond the right sequencing. Action, then bonus action, in that order. Miss that window and you've wasted either the spell or the transform. Get it right and Nysera becomes two threats at once — the beast in front of you and the ground you're standing on.

Bardic Inspiration: Always Buff Before the Fight Starts

Chris coaches Elaris on the most important Bard timing rule: Bardic Inspiration goes out before initiative, not during combat. She immediately puts it into practice.

A Bard's most powerful ability isn't just the die you hand out. It's when you hand it out.

Chris lays it down clearly for Elaris Moonveil: Bardic Inspiration should go out before rolling initiative — not mid-fight. The math is simple. If you decide to hand one off once combat has started, that's your action gone. One full turn spent on a buff that could have been free, because you gave it out in the hallway thirty seconds earlier. Similarly, eight-hour buffs get cast when you wake up in the morning, not when the room is already on fire.

Elaris takes the note and applies it immediately — Theren Vale gets the inspiration before the fight starts.

It's a small habit that changes every combat from that point forward. One extra die on an attack roll, a saving throw, or a skill check at the right moment can flip an outcome entirely. The best Bard turns are the ones where no one had to ask.
