The party cleared a serious fight and leveled up in the same breath. A short rest in the cavern they just won converts that win into resources — and a level-4 party that takes an hour to consolidate is stronger than a level-4 party that sprints into the next room with last fight's bill unpaid.
This is not hesitation. This is collecting what the level-up is owed.
What the Hour Actually Buys
This party gets an unusual amount back from a single short rest:
- Hit Dice for everyone — any damage from the ogre fight comes back without touching Selena's spell slots.
- Barzer: Arcane Recovery — once per day on a short rest he restores up to 2 levels of spell slots. If Fog Cloud and anything else went out in the entry fight, this is a partial refund.
- Nysera: Wild Shape recharges — both uses come back on a short rest. She can enter the next fight with the full buffer.
- Kaltor: Channel Divinity — he regains one expended use on a short rest. Sacred Weapon for the next fight, fully paid.
- Selena: Prayer of Healing — a 10-minute cast that fits inside the rest and tops off the group efficiently, keeping Healing Word in reserve for emergencies.
And the one-time dividend: level-4 choices. Anyone whose sheet isn't finalized yet — ability score improvements, feats, new spells — makes those decisions now, deliberately, instead of reactively in the next initiative count.
While the Party Rests
The bat works the whole hour. Barzer's familiar has 60-foot blindsight and costs nothing to operate. It scouts the next chamber while everyone else spends Hit Dice. By the time the rest ends, the party knows the next room's layout and occupants — including, pointedly, what the terrain actually is. No more plateau-shaped mud puddles.
Someone watches the rear. Goblin warriors and minions from the entry map were never confirmed dead. A resting party in a half-cleared cavern posts a watch — Theren's passive perception or Nysera in an unassuming shape both work.
Positioning gets decided out loud. Where Barzer stands (or hovers — he flies), where Selena stands, and who Elaris's five inspiration dice go to. Decisions made now are bonus actions saved later.
After the Rest
The party enters the next room with:
- HP topped off via Hit Dice and Prayer of Healing, not emergency slots
- Barzer partially refueled, Nysera at two Wild Shapes, Kaltor's Channel Divinity restocked
- Level-4 sheets actually finalized
- The bat's report on what's ahead, terrain included
Pros
- The most resource-efficient option on the table — this party's short-rest recovery list is long
- Level-up decisions get made with thought instead of adrenaline
- Scouting happens for free during time the party was spending anyway
Cons
- One hour for survivors to reposition, set up a chokepoint, or carry word deeper
- A half-cleared cavern is not a safe campsite — the watch is mandatory, not optional
Best If
The party spent real resources on the ogres and wants the next fight to start from full — informed, healed, and with the level-up actually on the sheets.
