Selena - Optimization Guide
Current Build Summary
Half-Elf Life Domain Cleric 3 | WIS 17 (+3) | CHA 16 (+3) | INT 13 (+1)
Spells: Bless, Healing Word, Sanctuary, Guiding Bolt, Sacred Flame, Guidance, Thaumaturgy, Mending
Life Domain gives Disciple of Life (healing spells restore 2 + spell level bonus HP), Channel Divinity: Preserve Life, and bonus spell access. Selena is the party's primary healer, but the current spell choices lean too heavily on Sacred Flame when better damage options are available.
Priority Changes
1. Replace Sacred Flame with Toll the Dead
Sacred Flame: DEX save, no damage on success. The ogre passed its DEX save and took nothing.
Toll the Dead: WIS save, 1d8 necrotic (or 1d12 if the target is already missing HP). Ogres have poor WIS. Necrotic damage is rarely resisted. A wounded ogre failing a WIS save takes 1d12 - better damage, better targeting, better against the actual enemies in this dungeon.
Sacred Flame is not a bad cantrip. Toll the Dead is better in this environment specifically.
2. Prepare Spiritual Weapon (Bonus Action Damage)
Spiritual Weapon (2nd-level, non-concentration): summon a floating weapon as a bonus action. Each subsequent turn, move it and attack as a bonus action. WIS-based attack roll, 1d8+WIS damage.
This is Selena's most efficient damage output. It doesn't require concentration (Bless or Sanctuary can stay up), it persists for 1 minute, and it frees actions for healing words or support. Should be prepared every session.
3. Understand the Life Domain + Goodberry Combo
If anyone in the party casts Goodberry, Selena's Disciple of Life feature applies: each berry restores 1+2+spell level (1st) = 4 HP instead of 1 HP. Ten berries from one spell slot becomes 40 HP of healing.
Nysera is a druid - Goodberry is on the druid spell list. If Nysera prepares Goodberry before the next long rest, each casting of Goodberry provides 40 HP of out-of-combat healing for the cost of one 1st-level slot. This is the most efficient healing in the game at these levels.
Spell Usage Guide
| Spell | Usage |
|---|---|
| Healing Word | Bonus action, 60ft range. Primary revival tool. Use when an ally goes down mid-combat. Never cast this as your main action - save the action for damage or control. |
| Bless | Opening move if Elaris hasn't cast it. Don't double-cast. Check first. |
| Guiding Bolt | Round 1 before melee closes. 4d6 radiant + advantage to next attacker. Strongest damage spell in the list - use it early. |
| Sanctuary | On yourself or an ally before entering a chokepoint. Enemies must save to target you. Combined with 20 HP and Life Domain, Selena can stay in the back safely. |
| Toll the Dead | Primary damage cantrip. Target low-WIS enemies. Use on enemies already wounded for the d12 upgrade. |
Channel Divinity: Preserve Life
Restore HP to any number of creatures within 30 feet, up to a combined total of 5 × cleric level (15 HP at level 3). Each creature can be healed up to half their max HP. No action cost beyond the Channel Divinity use.
Use this during a short rest or immediately after a hard fight, not in combat when Healing Word is more efficient per action.
Next Level-Up Plan
Level 4: +2 WIS takes you to 19 (+4). Better healing, better spell DCs, better saves. With WIS 18+ the spell DC goes to 15, which makes Toll the Dead and any control spells significantly harder to resist. This is the clearest ASI path for Selena's role.
