Theren Vale - Optimization Guide

Current Build Summary

Wood Elf Hunter Ranger 3 | DEX 18 (+4) | WIS 17 (+3) | CON 15 (+2)

HP: 28 | Spells: Cure Wounds, Hunter's Mark, Detect Magic, Speak with Animals

Theren has excellent ability scores. The problem this session wasn't stats - it was gear and spell choices. Scale mail cost him the scout, and the survival spells are underused.

Priority Changes

1. Upgrade Armor: Scale Mail to Breastplate

Scale mail: AC 14 + DEX max 2 = 16 AC, disadvantage on stealth.

Breastplate: AC 13 + DEX max 2 = 15 AC... but with DEX 18 you get the full +4, making it AC 17. No stealth disadvantage.

Theren rolled a natural 20 on stealth and still failed because scale mail forced a second roll. A breastplate ends that problem entirely and actually gives +1 AC over scale mail when accounting for full DEX bonus. Breastplate costs 400 GP - Theren currently has 302 GP, 23 SP. Close, and worth prioritizing.

2. Prepare Absorb Elements Instead of Cure Wounds

Absorb Elements (1st-level, reaction): when you take acid, cold, fire, lightning, or thunder damage, reduce that damage by half and add 1d6 of that damage type to your next attack.

Theren dropped to 0 from a single crit + normal hit in round 1. Cure Wounds requires a full action and is inferior to Healing Word at the same slot level (Healing Word is a bonus action). Absorb Elements is a reaction that could have cut that ogre damage in half when it mattered. Against cave environments with fire, ice, or lightning-using enemies, it has even more value.

3. Hunter's Mark Management

Hunter's Mark is Theren's core damage spell - 1d6 bonus damage on every attack against the marked target. But it requires concentration, which conflicts with nothing else Theren has. The issue is:

  • Mark the highest-HP enemy, not the first one you see
  • When the marked target dies, use a bonus action to transfer the mark (no slot cost)
  • If you lose concentration, re-casting costs another slot

Do not drop Hunter's Mark voluntarily. Keep it going for the whole fight.

Spell Usage Guide

Spell Usage
Hunter's Mark Cast before or in round 1. Transfer on kill. Primary damage multiplier.
Absorb Elements Reaction to incoming elemental damage. Half damage + bonus melee hit.
Detect Magic Ritual cast (10 min, no slot) for exploration. Do not use a slot for this.
Speak with Animals Ritual-capable if you have the feature; otherwise situational.

Scouting Protocol

Until the armor situation is resolved, consider the following when scouting:

  • Remove scale mail before scouting if time permits (5-10 minute reequip)
  • Alternatively, request Nysera prepare Pass Without Trace (concentration, +10 stealth to all nearby, no disadvantage override) before the next deep cave push
  • Scout with Favored Foe or advantage from other sources when possible

Next Level-Up Plan

Level 4: +2 DEX takes you from 18 to 20 (+5). That's +1 to attack rolls, +1 to damage with Archery, +1 to AC with the breastplate (18 AC total), and +1 to DEX saves/checks. Rangers are DEX-dependent - this is the strongest single investment available. No feat competes with it at this level unless you have a specific build goal.

At level 5, Extra Attack doubles your damage output. Hunter's Mark on an Extra Attack build is very strong - two attacks, both applying the 1d6 mark bonus.
