Dividing the Spoils

How to split the loot from the Battle of Nightstone

Time to split the take. Here's what we're working with.

The Haul

Currency (1,056 gp total)

  • 491 gold pieces
  • 5 gemstones worth 100 gp each (500 gp)
  • 4 platinum pieces (40 gp value)
  • Gold ring worth 25 gp

Equal split: 176 gp per person

Magic Item

  • Ring of Jumping (uncommon) - Cast Jump on yourself (triple jump distance for 1 minute), no attunement required

Common Weapons (to sell or keep)

Spears, javelins, shields, scimitars, short swords, short crossbows, great swords, greataxes

Currency Split Options

Option A: Straight Split

Everyone gets 176 gp. Simple and fair.

Current gold by character:

Character Current GP After Split
Kaltor 37 gp 213 gp
Theren 126 gp 302 gp
Elaris 107 gp 283 gp
Nysera 261 gp 437 gp
Barzer 102 gp 278 gp
Selena 71 gp 247 gp

Option B: Need-Based Adjustment

Kaltor has the least gold (37 gp). Consider giving him a larger share if he needs to buy supplies or equipment.

Ring of Jumping

This is the real decision. Who benefits most?

Candidate: Kaltor (Paladin)

For:

  • Frontline fighter who needs to close distance
  • 30 ft speed - slowest in heavy armor
  • Could leap into combat to protect squishier party members

Against:

  • Already has strong magic items (Amulet of Health, +1 Longsword)
  • As the tank, he wants enemies to come to him

Candidate: Theren (Ranger)

For:

  • Two-weapon fighting means he needs to be in melee range
  • Can switch between ranged and melee flexibly
  • Wood Elf already has 35 ft speed - the ring amplifies good mobility

Against:

  • Already mobile with elf speed
  • Prefers ranged combat with longbow

Candidate: Elaris (Bard)

For:

  • Got surrounded this battle - needs escape options
  • High DEX (+3) means she can capitalize on mobility
  • Can cast Identify to confirm the ring's properties

Against:

  • Could use spell slots for mobility spells instead
  • Not typically in melee

Candidate: Selena (Cleric)

For:

  • Primary healer needs to survive
  • Escape option if enemies target the healer

Against:

  • Should be positioned safely in the back line anyway

Not Recommended

  • Barzer - Already has flight capability
  • Nysera - Druid has Wild Shape for mobility

Recommendations

Most Practical

Give the ring to Kaltor. He's the slowest party member and needs to engage enemies quickly to protect the group. Heavy armor limits his mobility, and the ring compensates for that.

Based on Recent Events

Give the ring to Elaris. She was surrounded in the last battle. The ring gives her an escape route when things go wrong.

Compromise

Let Elaris use the ring for now. If she finds she doesn't need it, pass it to Kaltor.

Common Weapons

Nightstone is empty - no one to sell to here.

Options:

  1. Haul them out - Sell in the next town for maybe 50-100 gp total (heavy and slow)
  2. Keep some - Party members might want backup weapons
  3. Leave them - Not worth the weight

Questions for the Party

  1. Does anyone have a strong preference for the Ring of Jumping?
  2. Do we haul the weapons to a larger town, or leave them?
  3. Should Kaltor get a larger gold share given his low funds?
